compostable is the new recyclable

The KENT Compost Club offers a circular solution to the growing crisis of clothing waste. We partnered with a regenerative, organic farm in Southern California to divert waste from landfill, repurpose briefs in compost to become nutrient rich soil. Composting offers a grassroots solution that works with nature’s natural recycling process, requiring zero electricity, energy or chemicals.

why compost?

Underwear is one of the most difficult articles of clothing to dispose of – it cannot be donated or resold – and is often tossed in the trash at end of life. This contributes to the estimated 11 million pounds of undergarments sent to landfills daily in the USA. And because 85% of textiles today are made from fossil-fuel based, synthetic (aka plastic) materials like polyester, nylon and spandex, they stay in landfills for 200+ years, emitting methane and carbon dioxide in the process.

the benefits

Improves soil health

Reduces waste streams

Cuts greenhouse gas (methane) emissions from landfills

Lessens erosion

Conserves water, holding 5-20x its own weight in water

Sequesters carbon from the atmosphere… helping to reverse climate change

Sow a Heart Farm x KENT

Our composting partner, Sow a Heart Farm, is an organic, regenerative farm in Southern California. Founded by Mollie Engelhart, plant-based chef, regenerative farmer and owner of Sage Vegan Bistro, she began diverting food waste from her restaurants by bringing it back to the farm, creating compost, adding to the soil and closing the loop.

"Nature wastes nothing. Nature is always recycling."

- Mollie Engelhart, Owner of Sow a Heart Farm

Sow a Heart Farm is USDA certified organic and focuses on regenerative agriculture - farming and grazing practices that, among other benefits, reverse climate change by rebuilding soil organic matter and restoring degraded soil biodiversity – resulting in both carbon drawdown and improving the water cycle.

The farm organically grows oranges, apples, kale, cabbage, corn, mangoes and more. Discover more about the Farm here.

creating circular solutions

We believe the future of fashion is circular – regenerative and restorative by nature - where clothes and textiles become a resource rather than waste.

We aim to do more good than less bad, to create a positive impact rather than just reducing impact. The Compost Club completely reimagines the fashion cycle in move to a new circular economy that restores our planet, one brief at a time.

Our 100% plant-based designs return old briefs back to earth as a resource when composted or planted, feeding the soil and growing new plants (or future pants). It’s a new kind of circular system designed from the earth and back again.

How to Plant Your Pants™

Our goal is to give everyone the ability to compost their KENT briefs at the end of its useful life, whether they have access to a home compost or not. Customers purchase a Compost Club shipping label and send their KENT briefs ready for compost with carbon neutral shipping. Our team sorts, sanitizes and preps them for the compost, and customers receive a credit for future compostable products. KENT briefs are also home compostable - simply wash, cut up and pop in! Watch our at-home tutorial here.
