The Best Materials for your Bum (and our planet)

It's no mystery that we're big fans of natural fibers, but what materials are best when it comes to briefs on your bum? And, what type should we be wearing? According to Dr.'s, OBGYN's and those who wear underwear, there's a clear winner. Being mindful of what your briefs are made of can make a big difference to your daily comfort, overall health, hygiene and also positively impact the environment.

BEST FOR EVERYDAY: (ORGANIC) COTTON

When it comes to everyday, cotton is hands down your best and healthiest choice, according to Dr. Alyssa Dweck MD and ob-gyn in New York. Cotton's natural fibers work well to keep you feeling fresh. It is the most absorbent material, wicking moisture away from the skin and the best for promoting breathability.  Cotton's breathability is key, unlike synthetic materials (think: lycra, nylon, elastane) which can be confining and non-breathable - leading to irritation, rashes and infection. And, if you have super-sensitive skin or have recurring infections or irritation, opt for organic cotton says Dr. Dweck.

BEST FOR EXERCISE: MOISTURE-WICKING (OR COTTON, STILL)

When working out, some of the best briefs while exercising can be made from moisture-wicking materials as these will be most comfortable. BUT, you'll still need to change out of those undies as soon as possible post-workout. Working out in cotton will work just as well too, though the same rules apply - when done sweating it out swap for a fresh pair. The ultimate workout tip - avoid thongs at all costs. Tight and restrictive, these undies can cause all kinds of uncomfortable situations.

BEST FOR SLEEP: COMMANDO, IF YOU CAN

According to Dr. Samantha Dunhma, gynecologist at NYU, sleeping without underwear is the ultimate in breathable and non-contricting comfort. Going commando can also help curb any infections by keeping your bits dry.

BEST FOR THE ENVIRONMENT: 100% ORGANIC COTTON

The 100% is key here - meaning no fillers of spandex, elastane or lycra - simply focusing on the beauty of natural fibers at their finest. 100% means free of pesticides, plastics and petrochemical-based synthetics. Rest easy knowing that you can also wash them without being worried that plastic micro fibers are entering our oceans too. While the majority of underwear contain some form of synthetic stretch-iness (including typical polyester elastic) that will take hundreds of years to break down in landfill, our 100% organic cotton briefs are compostable in a matter of months, returning to nature from which they came. That goes for our elastic band too.

THE BEST OF THE BEST?

Putting on a pair of fresh briefs every morning that are good for your body and great for the environment.
